Business networking

What's in a name?

I have often been asked where the name The Guru Garage originates from and what it means to me.

I chose the word 'Guru' less for its traditional definition, but rather for its modern day interpretation relating to a recognised or influential expert in a particular field.

I chose the word 'Garage' because as a self confessed petrol-head, a childhood fantasy of mine was always to own a sports car garage.

I love cars. All cars. New ones, classic ones and vintage ones. I love the exotics, the collectables and the concepts. I love the way they look, smell and sound. To me, they are less about transport and more about art. I love their history, their evolution and, all too often throughout the ‘30s, ‘40s and ‘50s, the stories behind their untimely demise. I love those with heritage and those whose pedigree is simply vested in the outrageous brutality of monstrous horsepower shoe-horned under the bonnet. I could go on…

A while ago, during my several years as a Sales and Communication Consultant, I was even lucky enough to indulge my passion whilst working with a close friend and mentor, affectionately known by me as Swiss Feeney. He owns a business involved in the sourcing and sale of collectable classics and sports cars (see www.executivecars.co.za). I visited regularly to enjoy his witty discourse and inspect and minutely examine his fine stock. I drove them all. From the rare and seductively elegant Pierce Arrow of the 1930s right through to the latest muscular incarnation of the Aston Martin. The V12 Vanquish S. Surely one of the most evocative names and heart-stoppingly beautiful designs in modern automotive history.

Alas, my technical mechanical abilities are somewhat limited so for me, naming my company The Guru Garage was my chance to create a specialist garage all of my own.

Skill Mechanics

Here, through my focused specialisation on the delivery of The Kintish ‘Professional Networking Skills’ system, I can legitimately call myself The Head Mechanic.

I operate as a mechanic of the mind. I work on the heads of my delegates and offer a full mental overhaul in just one day. We cover a lot of mileage as we drive through networking manual. In the end, as the service records demonstrate, we deliver an out-of-the-box skills set for smooth handling of stressful networking situations and capacitate everyone, even the most reserved, to steer their way through the myriad pitfalls and challenges presented by the networking environment.

Much of training I deliver is undertaken in workshops. I delve into my toolbox to bring out highly specialised tools which I use to:

  • Improve performance in the area of business development.
  • Tune-up networking skills.
  • Park fears and concerns of walking into and working the room.
  • Balance talking and listening skills.
  • Focus the high beam on prospects.
  • Gear-up for the follow-up call.
  • Pitch the right business questions at the right moment.
  • Calibrate preparation and personal presentation during the planning  phase before an event.
  • Spark abilities to recognise the ‘Ahaaa moment’.
  • Supercharge your politeness, professionalism and courtesy in all circumstances.

Need I go further?

So there you have it!

It is this same passion for all things automotive that I bring to my professional life and which you can be guaranteed I will bring to our sessions.

I am passionate about the fact that however much more technically advanced we become and however much higher we may push the academic bar, nothing will ever detract from the need for face-to-face, eye-to-eye contact.

Business networking is the low-tech, non-negotiable skill-set you must acquire to be sustainably successful in an increasingly high-tech world.

I look forward to meeting you on my course.
